As PR professionals, we eat, sleep and breathe media. So where does #TeamAlice turn for our daily fix of all things news and current affairs? We’re back for the second instalment of ‘Media We Love’.

For our ‘Media We Love’ series, we’ve asked the team to share how they stay on top of breaking news, where they turn for further insight, and what their day-to-day media consumption patterns are.

Last month you met our Belfast based Senior Account Manager, Julie Sherlock. Up next is Ciarán Garrett, Account Manager with #TeamAlice. Ciarán has a keen interest in all things politics, especially US politics. Having worked as a Press Officer for the Labour Party, he continues to use his knowledge of public affairs across various client campaigns. Here are his day-to-day media favourites…

When and how do you get your first news updates of the day?

I search Twitter first thing, mainly looking at The Irish Times, The New York Times, Politico and The Guardian.

Tell us about breakfast and/or your commute – do you tune into the radio? Catch up on podcasts? Or read the morning papers?

For commuting, I generally listen to Pod Save America, Politico EU Podcast and the Irish Times ‘Inside Politics’ podcast.

Is the radio on in the background while you work? If so, who are you listening to? Do you always have one eye on Twitter?

Yes. I tune into RTÉ Radio One for ‘Morning Ireland’, ‘Today with Claire Byrne’, ‘News at One’ and ‘Drivetime’; and I check Twitter throughout the day as well.

What do you read on your tea/lunch break?

Generally, a long-read article I haven’t had the chance to read yet during the day, so it might be an opinion piece or feature in The New Yorker or The Economist.

Do you buy a print newspaper? If so, which one(s) and how often?

Occasionally a Sunday newspaper, like The Business Post or Sunday Independent.

What Twitter accounts do you follow to stay up to date with current affairs?

I find RTÉ’s Tony Connelly and Euronews’ Shona Murray are excellent for EU news, so I follow them. For US news, I always find Jake Tapper and Kate Bolduan to be good. For general news, I keep an eye on the RTÉ and The Irish Times Twitter accounts.

Are there any weekly columns, current affairs programmes, or newsletters you never miss?

I listen to ‘Pod Save America’ every week and I listen to the CNN ‘State of the Union’ podcast every week too.

What is your favourite media outlet outside of Ireland?

CNN or The New York Times. I check both every day.

Which news broadcast do you tune into at the end of your day?

RTÉ Nine O’ Clock TV news.

We just so happen to be posting Ciarán’s  Media We Love on his 30th Birthday! Since we can’t celebrate in true Alice fashion, this will have to mark the occasion but we’ll be adding this cause for celebration to the list of toasts we’ll have to make once we can all finally meet again.

Happiest of Birthdays Ciarán! 🎉
