We had a busy week of it – wandering around London and the equally glamorous Kilkenny, running, gigging, and catching up on telly!  That’s right, it’s time for our Friday recommendations and the latest news from #TeamAlice!

Out and About:

Niamh had a reasonably quiet weekend, trying to save herself for the Christmas festivities! She attempted the Park Run in Tymon park with her friend, but got a bit lost and couldn’t find the start-line so ended up doing their own little route and joining the runners along the way. Their intentions were good! Other than that, Niamh met a friend in South William Bar on Sunday evening – they do two gins for €10.50 from 5pm – 9pm on Sundays so they enjoyed sampling a few from their menu!

Emily ran the Clontarf Half Marathon on Saturday morning! It was a really nice crisp morning,  but it was FREEZING and SO windy. A good portion of it is on a beach which she found hard on the old legs, especially on the way back with the wind against her, but Emily managed to meet her goal and do it in under two hours – she finished it in 1.55.26 to be exact! (A great girl). On Sunday, Emily went for a spin on her bike to St. Anne’s Park which is one of her favourite parks – it’s really big and there’s a nice walking loop you can do, really recommend it. Nice café there too!

On Wednesday Emily went to a gig in Whelans – one of her favourite bands, BellX1, were playing a gig in aid of the charity Alone, which she volunteers with. Alone supports older people to age at home for as long as they are able to and provide a ‘befriending’ service for older people who might not have any family / are lonely. BellX1 invited members of ‘Blow the Dust’ orchestra, an orchestra for older people, on stage to perform some of their songs with them so it was lovely, a real feelgood gig!

Lizzy spent the last weekend celebrating Thanksgiving with her study abroad programme! A local cafe hosted a traditional dinner and it was absolutely delicious! A night filled with laughter and stuffed bellies. The rest of the weekend was exploring parts of Dublin such as Phoenix Park. Friday afternoon, Lizzy and her friends wandered through the park in search of the deer and they were absolutely beautiful! It was amazing to see how calm the deer were around people. On Saturday, Lizzy and her friend braced the intense wind and walked to the Poolbeg Lighthouse. It had been a bucket list item for months and Lizzy was excited to finally visit it, even if it was breezy.

Ellen had a nice relaxing weekend at home. On Saturday she went to Inistioge in Kilkenny, it’s such a cute little village with winding roads and old pubs. Ellen went to ‘Woodstock Gardens and Arboretum’ there. On Saturday evening she went to a restaurant called the ‘Galo Chargrill’ in Enniscorthy, it’s always a great meal, it’s a bit like a higher quality Nando’s!

This weekend Elaine’s family descended on Wicklow for the first time in ages. It was mayhem but good fun! Taking advantage of everyone being around, they hosted a small baby shower for Elaine’s sister, Pauline, who is due in early January. It was lovely and she was really surprised so it was great!

Martina spent the weekend in London. The highlights were a fantastic meal in a tapas restaurant on Saturday night and a visit to Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park on Sunday.  She wishes there was an equivalent event in Dublin – it was class: a combination of lovely Christmas market stalls, delicious food, mulled wine, a massive German beer hall, old-time fairground attractions, and a massive, modern funfair.  Martina was in her element!

Martina also finally got to play Cards Against Humanity over the weekend – she felt like she’s been hearing about it for years, but never played it before!  Great fun and they had a bit of a games extravaganza then – she moved on to Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble and a VERY tense game of Jenga.

Every Sunday night Ellen settles down to watch ‘Blue Planet 2’, which she just loves! Elllen does prefer ‘Planet Earth’ because she is not a fan of fish but still loves watching it. Nature is amazing and David Attenborough is the best man for the job!

Martina has been watching ‘Mr. Mercedes’, a Stephen King story starring Brendan Gleeson.  Brendan is great, but Martina finds the characters are getting a bit OTT and cartoonish as the series goes on.  She is about half-way through it, so she reserve final judgement until the end!

Lizzy has been plowing through the last few episodes of ‘Game of Thrones’. She is so eager to finish the series but also does not want to wait for the next season!

Niamh is completely hooked on ‘The Sinner’ on Netflix over the weekend. It’s so good! It’s starring Jessica Biel  she’s excellent in it. Biel is also ExeC Producer of the series, so big thumbs up, Jessica!

Elaine is still loving #ImACelebrity, but not convinced a winner is emerging just yet. She was #TeamToff but she’s fading a bit. We’ll just have to wait and see!

On Sunday, Emily and her housemates watched ‘Focus’, a Will Smith and Margot Robbie movie. It’s a crime/comedy film, it’s by no means amazing but it’s entertaining – perfect if you’re looking to watch something with people who have very different tastes!

On the plate:

Before Emily’s concert, she had a big bowl of ramen from ‘The Ramen Bar’ on South William Street which is totally recommend – the portions are massive, it’s really tasty and quick, and the restaurant itself is cosy. An ideal spot if you’re looking to eat something before heading to a gig or before a night on the town!

On the page:

Martina has started to read ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ by Margaret Atwood-finally!! It has been on her list to read for years.  She is flying through it & finding it really good.  Martina has been dying to watch the recent TV production, but wanted to read the book first, so she’ll be looking forward to moving on to that next!

Looking forward to…

The Holiday spirit has come to #TeamAlice and we are ready for the holiday festivities!

Niamh will be putting up the Christmas tree with her family this Friday and is also looking forward to Christmas songs and the Late Late Toy Show!

Elaine is really looking forward to the Toy Show on Friday – Christmas jammies at the ready & this will be the first time both Thomas and Susan will stay up for it so it’ll be very exciting!

Lizzy is excited to explore her last few weekends in Dublin by exploring as much as possible, while listening to Christmas music of course!

That’s all from us here at #TeamAlice! Let us know any of your recommendations below!
